This procedure is performed in patients who have abnormal coagulation profile or are obese and thus are unable to get a routine biopsy. the biopsy is performed under ultrasound and x ray guidance with a special needle that is introduced into the hepatic or renal vein through the jugular vein in the neck. the procedure is performed under local anesthesia and conscious sedation and takes about 30 minutes.
